Climate matters more than people realize

Most countertop guides treat material selection as a purely aesthetic or maintenance question. But in the Pacific Northwest — where indoor humidity runs consistently higher than in drier climates, where outdoor kitchens see real freeze/thaw cycles, and where gray winter light changes how colors read — climate is a real factor in material selection.

We've installed both granite and quartz across thousands of Seattle-area homes. Here's what we've learned.

Granite in the Pacific Northwest

Granite performs very well in Seattle's climate. It's a dense, natural stone with low porosity compared to marble or limestone. Properly sealed, it handles Seattle's humidity without issue. The slightly higher moisture content in the air does mean that unsealed or poorly sealed granite will absorb more than it would in a drier climate — annual sealing is worth the 30 minutes.

For outdoor kitchens and covered patios — increasingly popular on the Eastside — granite is one of the few countertop materials that handles freeze/thaw cycles reliably. Just make sure you're using a frost-resistant variety (most granites are; ask us to confirm before specifying for outdoor use).

Seattle's famously gray light is worth considering when choosing granite color. Dark granites (Black Pearl, Absolute Black, Titanium) look stunning in natural light but can recede under artificial kitchen lighting. We always recommend viewing samples under the actual lighting conditions of your kitchen.

Quartz in the Pacific Northwest

Quartz is non-porous by nature — humidity has essentially no effect on it. This is a genuine advantage in Seattle's climate. There's no sealing required, no absorption to worry about, and no concerns about moisture intrusion over time.

The one area where quartz underperforms in Seattle is outdoor use. Quartz resins are not rated for freeze/thaw cycles. If you're building an outdoor kitchen or a covered patio countertop, quartz is not the right material — use granite, quartzite, or porcelain instead.

For indoor use, quartz's non-porous nature makes it particularly low-maintenance in the consistently moist Pacific Northwest climate.

Our recommendation for most Seattle homes

For indoor kitchens and bathrooms: both materials perform well. Choose based on aesthetics and maintenance preference — quartz if you want zero maintenance, granite or quartzite if you want natural stone character.

For outdoor kitchens, covered patios, and decks: avoid quartz. Granite or frost-rated porcelain are the right choices.

For high-humidity areas (bathrooms, especially around showers): quartz wins on simplicity. If you want natural stone in a wet area, specify a low-porosity granite and commit to regular sealing.
