Types of kitchen sinks and their use

Considering a kitchen remodel? If so, you may be trying to determine which type of kitchen sink is right for your needs. There are plenty of options available, and while there’s no wrong choice, one of these may fit your style and kitchen layout better than others.

Types of Kitchen Sinks

  • Farmhouse style sinks: Farmhouse style sinks, sometimes called an apron sink, feature a rounded edge made of the same material as the inside of the sink. It may be stainless steel, porcelain, etc. These sinks can often be added to the middle of your countertop. These sinks give a kitchen a rustic look and feel and are perfect for farm-themed kitchens. These sinks are very deep and are ideal for those who cook a lot, as there is plenty of space for soaking and washing dishes.
  • Quartz sinks: Quartz sinks are usually designed for larger countertops. These sinks are very durable and have smooth surfaces which are easy to clean. The material is nonporous, so food particles won’t get in and bacteria won’t spread. They look great with granite or quartz countertops and again, are perfect for those who are in the kitchen a lot, since they are extremely durable and long-lasting.
  • Prep sinks: Prep sinks are smaller sinks which are not designed to be the kitchen’s main sink. They are usually a secondary sink within the kitchen, used just for preparing foods. They could also be used in a home’s bar area for cleaning glasses or prepping drinks. Prep sinks are great for busy chefs; they can be used while someone else is using the main sink. They are easy to clean up and are usually made from stainless steel.
  • Stainless steel sinks: Speaking of stainless steel, most sinks on the market today are made with from this material. This is because stainless steel is an inexpensive option that is very durable and easy to clean. Stainless steel won’t scratch easily and tends to fit in with most countertops and most kitchen styles.
  • Single-bowl sinks: Single-bowl sinks have one large basin with no dividers. Single-bowl sinks are becoming more popular and trendier. Many people prefer one large bowl rather than two. It is often easier to clean and offers a larger space for pots and pans. Single-bowl sinks fit nicely in smaller spaces, which is great for kitchens with less counter space.
  • Double-bowl sinks: Double-bowl sinks are often referred to as divided sinks. These sinks have two basins which are separated by a divider. Sometimes these two sinks are the same size, but they come in a variety of sizes, with one side larger than the other. Double-bowl sinks are perfect for washing dishes by hand, and some double-bowl sinks feature an integrated cutting board that fits over one sink. This provides an extra work surface. Additionally, the second sink can be used to separate dirty dishes from the food prep area or from the washing area. And with double-bowl sinks, it is much easier to get to your garbage disposal. With single-bowl sinks, you may find you’re always removing dishes to use the disposal.
